The former chairman of our Foundation Erik Ader has written a beautiful book. ‘Oorlogen & oceanen’. A family history. It tells an in-depth story about his search for a clearer image of his father and brother. The stories about the childhood of the two brothers also bring their mother closer, who created our foundation. Father’s missionary drive comes into the spotlight. Rev. Ader and his wife were close to move into a mission post in Cairo, before they moved into the parsonage of Drieborg. The calling to save souls in East Groningen changed dramatically when it came to saving Jewish lives. The dramatic consequences are well known. But loyalty to the original passion for bringing the Gospel kept his mother glued to Drieborg and the surrounding area for the rest of her life. The sons inherited their father’s wanderlust and sailed all over the world.
In the third and largest part of the book, Erik talks about his experiences as a diplomat in Beirut and his own travels to Israel, Egypt and the Palestinian territories, following in the footsteps of his father and also his mother. He speaks to former people in hiding, but also searches for the residents of the destroyed villages under the ‘Rev. Ader forest’ that was planted in Israel in honor of his parents. The book ends with his donation and planting of an alternative ‘Rev. Ader forest’ on Palestinian territory, as symbolic compensation for the suffering of the expelled Palestinians.
Our foundation is part of an ever-expanding ‘family’ of monuments made of stone, trees and books in memory of the special couple Rev. Ader.
